History of National Casein®

In 1921 National Casein® Company was incorporated in the State of Illinois by Louis T. Cook. Initially, the company devoted its efforts to the manufacturing of raw casein, casein adhesives and casein paints. The demand for casein adhesives exceeded Louis T. Cook's expectations and he began to concentrate on the millwork, furniture and woodworking markets.

After the death of Louis T. Cook in 1958 his son, Dr. Thomas H. Cook, became President of the company until 1992 when he stepped down as President but remained as a special consultant until his passing in September 2000. National Casein® Company continues to be owned and operated by the third generation of the Cook family.

During the 1940's, National Casein® began marketing synthetic resin adhesives: ureas and PVA's. Later in that decade, resorcinols and melamines were added to its line of products and, in the 1960's, crosslinking adhesives followed by adhesives for paper converting/packaging in the 1970's. Product developments during the 1980's to the present have included the introduction of water base contact adhesives and vinyl film laminating adhesives which provide high heat creep resistance, a new generation of high performance polyvinyl crosslinking adhesives and adhesives for membrane pressing films and wood veneers.

Our adhesives are used for cold press, hot press and high frequency bonding. Some applications where our adhesives are being used include finger jointing, laminated stiles and rails for doors, plywood fabrication (flat and curved), plastic tops, edge bonded panels, skateboards, windows, office partitions, interior and exterior doors, timber laminating, membrane pressing, office and household furniture, fabrication of honeycomb, carton/case sealing and many other applications.

Currently, National Casein® has plants located in Chicago, IL, Tyler, TX, Riverton, NJ, Santa Ana, CA and Scarborough, Ont., Canada. Warehouses are strategically located throughout the U.S.A. and Canada with distributors of our WOOD-STIK® adhesives located throughout the world.
